From clay to a lasting piece: what happens inside the kiln?
Every piece our students make is fired in our own kiln, without ever leaving the studio. Before it dries and meets the fire, ceramic clay is fragile; to become permanent, water-resistant and fit for everyday use, each piece goes through two separate firings: first a bisque firing, then a glaze firing after glazing. We manage this two-stage process for you with care, in our own electric kiln.

From the kiln to your home
Every ceramic piece takes its final, permanent form after being fired twice in total in our own kiln.
1. Drying
A shaped piece must dry completely before it goes into the kiln. Since a damp piece can crack inside the kiln, drying is done patiently, over several days.
2. Bisque Firing
Once dry, the clay is fired for the first time at approximately 900–980°C. This firing turns the clay into a porous yet durable "bisque" — now ready to be glazed.
3. Glazing & Glaze Firing
The glazed piece is fired a second time, generally at 1000–1060°C. At this temperature, the glaze turns into glass, giving the surface a glossy, waterproof and colourful finish.
Have your own ceramics? Rent our kiln
Even if you shape your ceramic pieces elsewhere or at home, you can still rent our kiln to have them fired. Including both bisque and glaze firing, you can use the same careful process without being a studio student.

What you might be wondering
Heating the kiln, the firing itself, and especially the slow cooling required for safety all take hours — the kiln is never opened before it has fully cooled. The whole process, from drying through to the glaze firing, usually takes 2–3 weeks, after which your piece is ready for collection.
Yes. Every piece made in our studio first goes through a bisque firing, then a glaze firing after it's glazed — two firings in total. Both stages are completed in our own kiln, without the piece ever leaving the studio.
Bisque firing is done at approximately 900–980°C, and glaze firing at approximately 1000–1060°C. The exact temperature is adjusted according to the clay and glaze used.
Rarely — cracking can occur in pieces that haven't dried enough or that are left too thin. That's why we check every piece for dryness and thickness before firing.
No. Bisque and glaze firing for pieces made as part of the ceramics studio is included in the process; there's no additional payment required.
Yes. You can rent our kiln for ceramic pieces you've made elsewhere too. Just reach out to us on WhatsApp in advance with the size, quantity and a suitable date.
