Ceramics for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Lesson

What does it feel like to hand-shape ceramics for the very first time? What you'll learn in your first session, plus a few small tips.

Shaping ceramics by hand for the first time can feel exciting and a little nerve-wracking at once. Here's the good news: nobody is born a master, and the point of your first lesson isn't to make a flawless piece — it's to get acquainted with clay and start learning its language.

What will you actually do in your first session?

Your instructor will first show you how to prepare the clay — wedging it and kneading out any air. From there, you'll learn the basic hand-building techniques: pinch, coil and slab. Most people leave their first lesson with a small bowl or cup taking shape in their hands.

A few tips that will come in handy

  • Keep your hands wet and steady — sudden movements will throw the form off.
  • Focus on your breathing and rhythm rather than the clay itself, and let patience lead the way.
  • Your first pieces may come out a little lopsided — that's completely normal, and it teaches you something for next time.
  • Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a bit messy; we provide the apron.

Once your piece has dried, it goes through bisque firing, glazing and a final firing — within a few weeks, you'll take home a usable piece you made with your own hands. Almost everyone leaves their first lesson saying the exact same thing: they had no idea where the time went.
