Candle Making Workshop: Pour Your Own Natural Soy Candle

From placing the wick to unmoulding the finished candle, the whole process is completed in a single session. Here's our step-by-step guide to candle making.

Candle making is a delightful studio experience that begins with melting natural soy wax and pouring it into a mould — quick to complete, and with a result you can hold in your hands right away. Since you choose the colour and scent yourself, the candle you take home is a design that's entirely your own.

How is a candle poured? Step by step

The process starts with melting natural soy wax at a low temperature; soy wax is preferred because it burns cleaner and carries scent better. Once the wax has melted, your chosen fragrance (essential oil) and colour (candle dye) are added. Next, the wick is placed in the exact centre of the mould — usually held in place with a stick or a clothespin — a step that matters for making sure the candle burns evenly and symmetrically. The liquid wax is then poured into the mould and left to cool slowly at room temperature. Once the wax has fully set, the candle is gently released from the mould, the wick is trimmed, and your candle is ready to use.

Choosing your mould, colour and scent

The most fun part of candle making is the personalisation stage. You'll choose from mould options ranging from a bust to a geometric shape to a classic jar — whichever speaks to you most; the colour can be a single tone or built up in layers. As for scent, you can decide based on the room it's for or your mood that day — sometimes a woody, calming fragrance is the pick, other times something sweet and energising.

Who can join?

Candle making suits both children and adults; any steps involving fire or hot wax are carried out under instructor supervision. Because it's completed in a single session, it's a popular choice for special-occasion celebrations, get-togethers with friends and birthdays. No experience is needed — even someone pouring a candle for the very first time leaves the studio that same day with a candle of their own design.
